(5 October 2012) News Splash n°9: The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) for implementation of the Human Right to water and sanitation has taken off online!

GENEVA (28 September 2012) – The Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, Catarina de Albuquerque, welcomed the adoption of a new law in the State of California which establishes the right of everyone to safe, clean, affordable and accessible water, adequate for human needs.

(20 September 2012) In a written question Rossi asks what efforts the European Commission undertakes to achieve equitable water for all. He gives a clear example of violation of the human right to water and sanitation in cases where hotels in tourist areas extract and pollute water at the expense of local population.

(3 September 2012) With a symbolic dam placed in front of the fountain on the Karlsplatz (Stachus), Ver.di members today launched the collection of signatures for the first European Citizens’ Initiative.

Ver.di, the German public service trade union has officially started the campaign 'Wasser ist ein Menschenrecht' in Leipzig. Over 130 trade unionists and members of supporting organisation joined the fountain event on 21 June and collected signatures. In Germany the campaign is carried out by a coalition of groups that in the past already campaigned for public control over water and good, safe and affordable water services for all. In five other cities people promoted the campaign and collected signatures: Berlin, Hamburg, Dortmund, Augsburg and Munich.

(21 June 2012) During its annual conference UNISON delegates took some time to step out of their programme to join the European fountain events in support of the European Citizens’ Initiative for the human right to water and sanitation.

(26 June 2012) News Splash n°7 : On 21 June 2012 events were held at fountains all across Europe to promote the campaign “Water is a human right!” and photos can be seen on the website There were actions across the continent - from Stockholm to Rome and from Dublin to Warsaw.
